PHYSIOTHERAPY / ORTHOPAEDIC REHABILITATION SERVICES

Since 1986, L' Esprit rehabilitation clinics have been providing the best physiotherapy services in the Montreal area. Physiotherapy is the art and science of rehabilitation. It helps people with musculoskeletal problems return to a functional level. For example, our physiotherapy services can help treat the following problems:

  • Tendinitis/ Bursitis (overuse injuries)
  • Back and neck problems
  • Post-surgical / post-traumatic impairments
  • Work injuries
  • Chronic pain / weakness (as a result of arthrosis)
  • Ligament / muscle strain or sprain

Our physiotherapists are trained in the following fields:

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
Our staff works in consultation with your orthopaedic surgeon to ensure a safe and speedy recovery. Rehab is staged to coincide with the anticipated process of healing.
  • Manual therapy
This technique consist of traction and mobilizations of the spine and of all limb joints which serve to increase range of movement in areas which have become stiff with disuse or following an injury
  • Exercise Prescription
From the moment therapy begins, exercises are prescribed to improve function. Our exercise specialists design programs which can be carried out at home or in our fully equipped gymnasia. In addition, cardiovascular condition can be tested, followed by a program tailored to the patient's needs.
  • Sports therapy
Prophylactic taping of injuries, reduction of the acute inflammation associated with injuries and eventual return to sport are some of the hallmarks of our sports therapy service. Elite, amateur, and weekend athletes can all benefit from a professional approach to "getting back into the game."
  • McKenzie approach
This technique is a systematic approach to evaluate and treat mechanical neck and back pain resulting from spinal stenosis, lateral foraminal stenosis, facet irritations, disc problems and sciatica or brachialgia. The evaluation is geared to find the preferred or pain-reducing movement; the movement is then prescribed to the patient so that he/she can control and/or abolish his/her own pain.
  • Hand therapy
Focuses on manual dexterity, mobility, strength and endurance capacities. We work in consultation with hand surgeons, rheumatologists, physiatrists, and orthopaedic surgeons to understand the complexities of all hand injuries, and to ensure excellent results.

CANCER REHABILITATION

In March 2000 L'Esprit became the first private clinic in Montreal to offer rehabilitation services designed for patients coping with cancer and its often toxic treatments. The goal of our service is to combat the pain, nausea, fatigue, and muscle loss which go hand-in-hand with traditional cancer treatments (e.g., chemotherapy, radiotherapy, tumor resection, osteosarcoma, myosarcoma, bone-marrow transplantation). Generally our goal is allow our patients to maintain the level of functionality needed to remain active within their families and communities. Thanks to our head start with this unique type of rehabilitation service, we now offer the highest quality service of its kind available anywhere in the province of Quebec.

Treatment for lymphedema is also available with Carol Anne Shay, B.Sc., Pt., our certified specialists in Decongestive Therapy.

NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION

Patients with neurological conditions can benefit immensely from physical therapy. Notably, these patients can expect to improve their balance, endurance, strength, and coordination. Our therapists can address dysfunction related to stroke, Parkinson's disease, head trauma, Multiple Sclerosis among others. Upon discharge from acute care facilities, we can develop rehabilitation programs to maintain and enhance the patient's ability to remain engaged in life's daily activities.

EXERCISE THERAPY

Regaining and maintaining strong and flexible muscles and joints is a necessary component of most physical rehabilitation programs. With this in mind, each L'Esprit Rehabilitation Centre is staffed with an exercise therapist who will help you achieve your optimal level of functionality. Under the guidance of these professionals, you will be introduced to a wide array of training apparati. Freeweights, a Weider universal gym, a variety of stationary bikes, treadmills, and proprioception equipment are just some examples of the equipment you may use during (and following) your physical therapy.
