Our addictions treatment approach is based on the therapeutic community model with core self-help principles and individual counselling and case management. We offer a psychologically and physically safe residential program in a positive peer culture environment. We believe that the inherent strengths of our clients are the basis of their recovery. The supportive therapeutic community environment helps clients discover these strengths and is therefore conducive to personal development. The program’s focus builds on the client’s strengths through a process of social learning based competency acquisition. Treatment planning is participatory, with clients setting priorities. It is also inclusive; encouraging participation from both significant others and family members as well as the network of service providers involved. Counselling, case management and individual treatment planning are central to the treatment process. It provides a continuum of care and offers constant support to the residents and their families. The treatment programs consist of a series of social contracts entered into by the individual with the Thorpe community, whereby the individual agrees to discuss the issues that he/she is currently working on. The community provides guidance and encouragement, while supporting the individual’s efforts to meet the obligations that have been set and to achieve his/her goals. We employ a number of therapeutic techniques, including role modeling, a system of upward social mobility, group and individual counselling, along with collaborative treatment planning. We also employ current industry best practices in the context of a residential rehabilitation milieu.

Level of Care:

SMART Recovery:

SMART (Self-Management & Recovery Training) is a method addiction recovery, often seen as an “alternative” to 12-step programs. It emphasizes 4 core areas: Building Motivation, Coping with Urges, Problem Solving, and Lifestyle Balance. The SMART approach views substance use as a dysfunctional habit (not a disease), emphasizes the latest scientific research on addiction, and believes each individual finds his/her own path to recovery. Notably, relapses are seen as a normal part of the change cycle and good learning experiences if handled properly. SMART can be put to use anywhere (any rehab facility or group).

Holistic Treatment:

Rather than focusing solely on addiction, holistic treatment facilities treat patients in terms of their whole being. Holistic treatment is about more than just addiction and sobriety – it addresses the person’s life in its entirety, including career, physical, familial, and spiritual aspects.

Medically Assisted Detox:

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

24 Hour Clinical Care:

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Inpatient:

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Individualized Treatment:

Certain drug and alcohol rehab centers have standard treatment regimes they expect all patients to follow. Others offer individualized treatment, meaning they tailor treatment to a person's specific background and needs. For example, a rehab facility may adjust a treatment program to take into account the type of drug or addiction from which the person suffers, their age, medical condition(s), religious beliefs, or lifestyle.

12-Step:

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Aftercare Support:

There is no quick fix for addictions or mental health disorders. The 42-90+ days spent in a treatment facility is the just beginning to a much longer journey. We like to look at continuing care as an investment in your future, a way to build on your treatment facility success and transitional support navigating back into everyday life. Studies show that individuals are 65-70% more likely be remain sober over a 5-year period with 2 or more forms of aftercare. Whether it be a Recovery Support Group (12-Step or SMART), group or individual counselling, or sober living through a safe house, it is vital to one’s future to have a plan after treatment. Think of coming out of treatment like waking up from a coma and trying to navigate back into a society that has gone on without you. It can be confusing, tricky to navigate, uncontrollable, stressful, triggering, and celebratory. Because of this, studies show that relapse is most common within the first 90 days after treatment so most importantly, you’ll need support. Continuing Care is the third phase in Thorpe Recovery Centre’s treatment process. Think of Detox like elementary school, Residential Treatment like high school, and Continuing Care like university. Detox will get you clean, Residential will teach you the basic tools, and continuing care will help pull everything together. Continuing Care Program at Thorpe offers once a week, online, process group counselling support that you are familiar with. The weekly session allows clients to have accountability to their peers, relate experiences, warn about relapse signs, and encourage through each others recovery. Continuing Care is an affordable safety net in a confusing world, an easy extension of one’s support network with the peers, and an investment in one’s future.

Treatment Focus:

Substance Abuse:

Substance Abuse Treatment Centers focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Opiate Addiction:

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Alcoholism:

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Dual Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment:

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Therapy Programs:

Family Therapy:

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Individual Therapy:

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma Therapy:

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Group Therapy:

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Eating Disorder Treatment:

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Life Skills:

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy:

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
